Rapid River man arrested on multiple felony charges

ESCANABA — Michigan State Police report that a 28-year-old man from Rapid River was arrested Sunday on

multiple felony offenses. The incident netted a significant number of firearms and drugs, police said.

On Sunday, a trooper from the state police post in Gladstone, while on patrol on LL Road in Garden Township, observed a subject with an active arrest warrant riding a bicycle. The trooper saw the suspect cross the intersection of LL Road and US-2 without stopping and initiated a traffic stop. The suspect initially ignored commands to stop and rode to a nearby residence before complying. The trooper then took the suspect into custody for the warrant.

Troopers discovered, during the investigation, that the suspect was carrying a concealed pistol, methamphetamine and prescription pills not prescribed to him. The suspect did not have a concealed pistol license. A subsequent search of the suspect’s residence resulted in the seizure of another pistol, 14 long guns and additional methamphetamine. One of the rifles recovered had been reported stolen in 2016.

The suspect was lodged in the Delta County Jail in Escanaba.

On Monday, 28-year-old Michael Riggers of Rapid River was arraigned in the 94th District Court in Escanaba on charges of possession of methamphetamine, carrying a concealed weapon, maintaining a drug house, possession of analogues and resisting and obstructing a police officer.

The defendant’s bond was set at $25,000 cash/surety, and he is scheduled to appear in court again on April 9.

The state police was assisted in the investigation by personnel from the Delta County Sheriff’s Office.
