SAULT STE. MARIE — At approximately 3:20 p.m. last Saturday, troopers from the Michigan State Police post in Sault Ste. Marie responded to a report of a serious snowmobile crash on West Green Shack Road near South Chippewa Hunt Club Row.

The preliminary investigation found that the driver of the snowmobile was traveling southbound on West Green Shack Road when it struck an embankment, causing the snowmobile to go airborne and eject the driver.

Emergency medical aid was attempted by a witness, but the driver, a 62-year-old man from Eckerman in Chippewa County, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. Police said speed appears to have been a factor in the crash.

The state police was assisted at the scene by Whitefish Township Fire and EMS and Chippewa County Central Dispatch.
