Death of two-year-old boy remains under investigation in Ironwood

IRONWOOD — The Gogebic County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the death of a two-year-old boy from Ironwood.

At approximately 4:21 a.m. Thursday, GCSO deputies were dispatched following a report of a deceased child in Ironwood Township. Upon arrival, responding deputies immediately began assessing the child for signs of life. However, it was confirmed the child was deceased. The incident is under further investigation. There is no danger to the public.

“This is a tragic incident, losing a young member of our community is very hard for all of us,” said Sheriff Jorge H. Cruz. “We will continue to investigate to determine what happened and will provide further updates to the public when that information is available.”

Deputies secured the scene and the investigation began. There was a temporary closure of Lake and Sunset roads while the investigation was being completed. Further investigative resources were requested from the Michigan State Police, which included personnel from the Marquette Forensic Laboratory.

The Gogebic County Sheriff’s Office was supported throughout the response by multiple agencies, including the Michigan State Police Wakefield post, Michigan State Police traffic crash reconstructionist, Ironwood Public Safety Department, Gogebic County Road Commission, Ironwood Township Fire Department and Gogebic County Victim Services Unit.
