Cannabis vape recycling effort underway
MARQUETTE — The Fire Station is partnering with Citizens for a Safe & Clean Lake Superior to launch Marquette County’s first cannabis vape recycling program, effective Wednesday. The partnership aims to address the growing environmental problem of disposable vaping devices by creating a dedicated and accessible solution for Marquette County residents.
Over the past 14 months, has successfully diverted over 500 pounds of nicotine vapes from local landfills through a program with five collection sites across the county. With the financial support of TFS, this program now expands to include cannabis vapes, with all collected cannabis units being processed by a specialized nonprofit recycling center based in Michigan.
“The Fire Station’s generous sponsorship provided us the opportunity to expand our program and further reduce the amount of hazardous waste entering our landfills and waterways,” CSCLS Outreach Coordinator Chris Crouse said. “This collaborative initiative fills a very real void in recycling efforts and benefits our environment and our community.”
Disposable nicotine and cannabis vapes contain hazardous materials like lithium batteries, which pose a significant risk to landfills and waterways if not disposed of properly. This partnership will give Marquette County cannabis consumers–whether they shop at The Fire Station or another retailer–convenient and compliant sites to dispose of their used vapes responsibly.
“Vape recycling is a community effort and this partnership marks a crucial step forward for environmental stewardship in the cannabis industry,” shared TFS CEOs Logan Stauber and Stosh Wasik in a joint statement. “In partnering with CSCLS, we are not only backing a local organization with a proven track record, but also providing a tangible solution to a growing concern. We are grateful for this opportunity to support their work protecting the Lake Superior region, ensuring the ecological integrity of the community we serve.”
