Bois Blanc man arrested
Gerald Chad Plum
BOIS BLANC ISLAND — On Monday, March 9, at approximately 1:30 p.m., Chippewa County Central Dispatch notified Mackinac County Sheriff’s Office of an active incident on Bois Blanc Island. CCCD advised that they were speaking to a 63-year-old female that resides on the island who was currently hiding inside of her residence because her 41-year-old male neighbor was firing high-powered rifle rounds into her home. The caller advised that she could see at least three bullet holes in her residence at the time she called.
Mackinac County Sheriff’s Deputies immediately began planning for a very difficult operation to rescue the victim and address the suspect due to limited resources on the island and the inability to move large tactical equipment to the island.
Mackinac County Deputies began preparing criminal charges and search warrants in preparation for the operation while others requested assistance from Michigan State Police St. Ignace post and the state police Emergency Services Team. Additional preparations were made with the Bois Blanc Township officials and Bois Blanc Fire Department to provide law enforcement with numerous vehicles to allow personnel and equipment to get to the incident scene.
State police Aviation along with fixed wing aircraft from Fresh Air Aviation and Northwoods Aviation assisted in moving law enforcement personnel and small tactical gear to the island.
Shortly after MSP-Emergency Services Team Arrives, they were able to safely remove the caller from her residence and take her to a safe location. The ES Team then directed their attention into taking the shooting suspect into custody, which was accomplished at approximately 9 p.m. when the 41-year-old suspect surrendered without incident.
The suspect, Gerald Chad Plum, has been arraigned and is currently lodged at the Mackinac County Jail on multiple felony charges. Bond has been set at $750,000 and GPS Tether. This case is still under investigation. No one was injured during this incident and there is no additional threat to the community.
