Baraga correctional officer named Michigan’s Corrections Officer of the Year

BARAGA — Officer Joseph Perala of the Baraga Correctional Facility has been named Michigan’s 2026 Corrections Officer of the Year.

“With 19 years of dedicated service, Officer Perala exemplifies professionalism, leadership, and a commitment to safety,” reads a post put out on the Michigan Department of Corrections Facebook page.

“His chain of command at Baraga Correctional Facility describes him as ‘a tremendous asset … always willing to go the extra mile’ and ‘a positive role model for newer staff members.’

“Throughout his career, beginning at Alger Correctional Facility and then at Baraga Correctional Facility since 2016, Officer Perala has earned a reputation as a teammate and leader who can be relied upon. He responds decisively during critical incidents and continually seeks out additional training to strengthen facility safety.

“He is an outstanding representative of MCOC. Please join us in celebrating Officer Perala for his exceptional service and well-deserved recognition,” concludes the post.
