MARQUETTE — Marquette Police Department officials released a statement Tuesday that the search for missing 21-year-old Northern Michigan University student Trenton Massey, last seen early Sunday morning, would “focus on the water of the Lower Harbor, near Founder’s Landing, based on further information received on 2/23/2026,” said the statement.

Land-based search efforts continued on Tuesday, with volunteers meeting at the Hampton Inn on Lakeshore Boulevard to receive a briefing before heading out.

NMU released a statement on Monday stating that “hundreds of volunteers showed up in tough conditions to search for (Massey). It was notable to see students, employees, alums and neighbors come together and answer the call for assistance from the Marquette City Police Department. A major portion of downtown and South Marquette has been searched.”

NMU also thanked a list of businesses who “stepped forward to provide much needed support for the volunteers,” naming Provisions Coffee, Texas Roadhouse, Jimmy Johns, SAIL, Panera, Dominos, Contrast Coffee, Trenary Toast and Baby Cakes.

“Numerous businesses, including Range Bank, Lake Superior Press and Marquette Regional History Center, opened their doors for volunteers to get out of the cold.”
