Marquette Fire Department warns people to stay off Lower Harbor ice

MARQUETTE — Over the past few weeks, many residents of Marquette and visitors to the area have been enjoying ice skating, walking and ice fishing on the frozen Lower Harbor. However, the city fire department put out a statement on Monday warning against these activities.

“The ice in Marquette’s Lower Harbor is not safe,” reads a public safety alert released by the department. “We received reports of an individual this morning falling through the ice. Fortunately, they were able to self-extricate and are safe.

“Do not go out onto the ice. Ice conditions and thickness are highly unstable and can change rapidly, even within hours. What looks like solid ice may fail without warning.

“For your safety and the safety of others, please stay off the Lower Harbor ice,” concludes the report. “Please take this warning seriously and keep yourself and others safe. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to the Marquette Fire Department.”
