LoveMarq Church to offer sober Super Bowl celebration

MARQUETTE — At 5:30 p.m. on Sunday, LoveMarq Church at 728 West Kaye Avenue will be hosting its fourth annual Super Bowl watch party, with all of the fun and none of the alcohol.

“We started hosting (Super Bowl watch parties) as an alternative option, primarily for people in recovery, as our church has a significant number of people involved in AA,” said Chad Mager, pastor at LoveMarq Church. “Once local AA groups caught wind of it and knew they were invited, it just grew as they were happy to be able to enjoy the big game with others without the worry of an environment with a bunch of alcohol, which is usually the case at most Super Bowl parties.”

Food is always provided, with this year’s party featuring a potluck taco bar provided by members of the church.

“It always amazes us when people also show up with food or beverages to add to what we are offering,” said Mager. “It really becomes a community thing.”

Although the church will be providing some beverages, Mager encourages people to bring their own so long as they do not contain alcohol.

“We have a big screen TV that’s mounted in our event venue, so everyone has a good view,” said Mager. “And of course, it is completely free to attend.”
