MARQUETTE — From 6-9 p.m. on Saturday, Kognisjon Bryggeri in Marquette will be hosting a special event to celebrate the release of their new limited edition chocolate stout beer, called Hazel’s Love Potion, with a portion of each pint being donated to the Upper Peninsula Animal Welfare Shelter.
The release is part of UPAWS “Name a Beer After Your Pet” campaign, and this year’s winner is Hazel the cattle dog mix.
“At our annual Cause for Paws gala we do this special live auction,” said Amber Talo of UPAWS. “The highest bidder wins a beer named after their pet! It’s kind of a fundraiser within a fundraiser. The winner gets the special release party, all of the marketing, the publicity, plus limited edition T-shirts.”
Hazel is owned by Jamie Dolan.
“Hazel is a very special dog in that she was Jamie’s daughter’s dog, who unfortunately passed away in 2017,” said Talo. “Grandma (Jamie) took custody of Hazel, and they have a very special love that transcends time and helped them through that time.”
Hazel is also a regular at a local cold water swimming club.
“Hazel puts her cattle dog instincts to use regularly as the official mascot of the Frost Coast Plunge Posse — a group of cold water immersion enthusiasts who plunge nearly every day of the year in Lake Superior,” said Talo. “She greets each person at the beach prior to entering the water and again as they exit.”
The event will also feature commemorative T-shirts, specials from Third Street Grill, and live music by local band The Daydreamers. All T-shirt profits will go towards UPAWS.
“Name a beer after your pet” has been a successful running UPAWS fundraiser since 2016.
“At first we thought we’d raise a couple hundred, but now we have raised well over $20,000,” said Talo.
“This one is a little extra special because we’re planning it during the UP200 weekend. If you’re a dog lover, this is the weekend for you.”
UPAWS will be providing desserts which pair with the flavor profile of the beer. Hazel herself may or may not make an appearance.
“Help spread the love this Valentine’s Day as we celebrate Hazel and the love she spreads on a daily basis,” said Talo.
