MARQUETTE — After several sunny days of thawing ice and melting snow, winter is back with a vengeance. Most of the Upper Peninsula was under a National Weather Service-issued Winter Storm Warning yesterday, calling for gusting winds, mixed precipitation, ice and more snow.

“Heavy snow and mixed precipitation,” read the Winter Storm Warning for Baraga and Marquette Counties issued Wednesday morning. “Additional snow accumulations between 3 and 8 inches, greatest in the areas of high terrain of northern Marquette County, and ice accumulation around a light glaze to a tenth of an inch. Winds gusting as high as 40 mph near Lake Superior.”

The National Weather Service went on to report that travel on Wednesday would be “very difficult,” impacted by blowing snow which reduced visibility.

“Wet snow and gusty winds could bring down tree branches and cause sporadic power outages,” read the statement.

Shovels, snow-blowers and plows were out in full force on Wednesday, as the snow accumulation continued throughout the day. And more snow is coming, with precipitation predictions continuing into the weekend.

The National Safety Council urges caution while shoveling, especially with wet, heavy snow.

“While most people won’t have a problem, shoveling snow can put some people at risk of heart attack,” says the National Safety Council’s website. “Sudden exertion, like moving hundreds of pounds of snow after being sedentary for several months, can put a big strain on the heart.”

They recommend taking it slow, only lifting partial shovel-fulls, pushing snow instead of lifting it and taking frequent breaks.

“Don’t pick up that shovel without a doctor’s permission if you have a history of heart disease,” says the NSC. “A clear driveway is not worth your life.”
