Crash on U.S. 2 leaves 1 dead, 4 injured

MARQUETTE — A crash on U.S. 2 between a semi-truck and a pickup truck on Friday resulted in one dead and four injured.

At approximately 9:16 p.m. on Friday, troopers from the Michigan State police Manistique outpost were dispatched to a report of a crash involving a semi-truck and a pickup truck on U.S. 2 near County Road 442 in Inwood Township.

The preliminary investigation shows the pickup truck was traveling westbound on U.S. 2 and was attempting to pass another passenger vehicle in the passing lane during whiteout conditions and on icy roads. The pickup truck lost control and struck a semi-truck traveling eastbound. The pickup truck was occupied by two adults and three children.

The front seat passenger of the pickup truck, a 38-year-old woman from Rapid River, was pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver of the pickup truck and one passenger were transported to Schoolcraft Memorial Hospital for treatment of minor injuries. A rear seat passenger of the pickup truck sustained serious injuries and was transported to Schoolcraft Memorial Hospital, then later flown by Guardian Flight to Children’s Wisconsin hospital in Milwaukee for further treatment. Another passenger from the pickup truck was transported to UP Health Systems Marquette for treatment of a head injury. The driver of the semi-truck was not injured.

The crash remains under investigation, but drugs and alcohol are not believed to be factors. Manistique troopers were assisted by Michigan State Police Gladstone Post, Michigan State Police Aviation Unit, Michigan State Police Northern Regional Communications Center, Inwood Township Fire Department, Garden Township Fire Department, Tri Star Emergency Medical Services and the Manistique Public Safety Department.
