Two-vehicle crash in western U.P. kills one

ONTONAGON — The Ontonagon County Sheriff’s Department is investigating a two-vehicle crash that took place at about 1:30 p.m. Saturday on M-28 in Bergland Township, killing one person and injuring two others.

According to a police report, a Minnesota couple, westbound on the roadway, and an eastbound vehicle driven by an 81-year-old man from the village of Wakefield, collided. The 81-year-old was taken by ambulance to Aspirus Ironwood Hospital where he died. The woman from Minnesota, aged 63, was also transported to Aspirus Ironwood Hospital for treatment of injuries. The 61-year-old man from Minnesota also sustained injuries of an unknown nature.

Ontonagon County Sheriff’s Department personnel were assisted at the scene by Michigan State Police from the Wakefield post plus personnel from the U.S. Forest Service, the Bergland Fire Department and Beacon Ambulance.
