MARQUETTE — Northern Michigan University’s Lydia Olson Library has been under construction since early July and is set to reopen to the public on Jan. 12 in its Harden Hall renovated space. A temporary library location has been functioning out of Gries hall since construction started.

“The library will be closed to the public from Saturday, Dec. 13 through Sunday, Jan. 11,” wrote NMU library web developer Jacob Jeffries in a public release. “During the closure, borrowed items may be returned to the NMU Police Department in the Services Building at 2073 Sugarloaf Ave.”

The library will see the NMU Archives and Beaumier Heritage Center move in, as well as the history and political science departments. Students also had a hand in the library’ furniture choice, as NMU held a week-long survey where students could try out and rank furniture options.

But students and faculty will need to wait until early January to have most library services.

“Faculty who placed items on course reserves during the fall will be able to pick up items on Monday, Jan. 12,” said Jeffries. “If you need your items sooner than that, Mary can send them to you via campus mail. Faculty who would like to place things on course reserves for the winter 2026 semester should reach out to Mary Harma as soon as possible to avoid delays at the beginning of the semester.”

More information on the move can be found at lib.nmu.edu/renovation/news/library-move-back-harden-hall. An update with details on new services, resource locations, and information on arranging tours of the renovated space will be provided in early January.
