MARQUETTE — Due to extreme cold temperatures, the Noquemanon Ski Marathon cancelled some events and delayed others Friday and today.
“All Friday Events (Junior Noque and Adaptive) are cancelled due to forecasted low temperatures,” says the Noquemanon Ski Marathon website. “1 Hour delay for 50k waves due to forecasted low temperatures. All other Saturday events will proceed as scheduled.”
The organization has also instituted strong recommendations for race participants to dress appropriately for the weather.
“Weather conditions will be very cold this year, and taking preventative measures against frostbite and hypothermia is imperative for all participants regardless of the distance of the event,” states the 2026 Noquemanon race bulletin.
“Frostbite can occur in as little as 10 minutes on exposed skin at the forecasted temperatures. Dress appropriately for very cold conditions by using multiple layers, including one or two base layers that wick moisture away from the skin. Use an additional wind-blocking layer over sensitive areas. Cover all exposed skin to prevent frostbite.”
All race events finish at the Superior Dome in Marquette, where spectators can watch skiers until 4:30 p.m. An awards ceremony will be held inside the Superior Dome at approximately 5 p.m.
For those wanting to watch skiers cross the finish line at the Superior Dome tomorrow, race coordinator Nicole Swenson says that the busiest time for finishers is between noon and 3 p.m.
“Mother nature always gives the Noquemanon Ski Marathon many challenges,” said Swenson. “But the best thing about the race are the diehard volunteers and the support from community members who rally around the event.”
