The National Weather Service instituted an extreme cold warning starting Thursday night which will be in duration through Saturday morning, ending at 10 a.m.
The cold weather resulted in closures for all area school districts on Friday, including Gwinn Area Schools, Father Marquette Academy, Ishpeming Public Schools, Marquette Area Public Schools, NICE Community Schools, North Star Montessori Academy, Powell Township Schools and Republic-Michigamme Schools. Negaunee Public Schools students already had the day off for teacher professional development.
As a testament to the hardiness of U.P. residents, though, many people have ventured out despite the cold.
“It feels like I’m trying to breathe in solid air,” said Sara Daniels, a pedestrian in downtown Marquette. “After just a few seconds, I could feel (the) freezing in my nose!”
