CHAMPION — Van Riper State Park has announced plans for three upcoming lantern-lit snowshoe events.
The first event will be held from 7-9 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 9 at the Michigan Iron Industry Museum, located at 73 Forge Road in Negaunee.
The next two events will be at Van Riper’s Rustic Peshekee Cabin trails, from 7-9 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 23 and Friday, Feb. 6.
Park staff is encouraging carpooling as parking is limited for these events.
The Van Riper Facebook page reads, “With kerosene lanterns guiding your way, there is a 1.5 mile self-guided loop winding through the snow-filled woods. The trail starts at the Peshekee River Rustic Cabin, where the cabin will be open with a warm fire beckoning inside. The trail will be packed, but please bring your snowshoes. The park will have a limited supply available on a first-come, first-serve basis.”
Park staff will be monitoring conditions and may cancel the event in the occurrence of inclement weather (severe storms/temperatures). Any cancellation will be posted on the Van Riper Facebook page.
