Learning to Walk Together Pow Wow returns to NMU on Saturday

MARQUETTE — The community is invited to attend the Learning to Walk Together Pow Wow on Saturday at the Northern Center, 540 W. Kaye Ave., Marquette, MI. Admission is free and open to the public.

This annual gathering brings together dancers, singers, families, and visitors from across the Great Lakes to share in a day of culture, tradition, and community. Organized in partnership with the Bay Mills Indian Community, Keweenaw Bay Indian Community, Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians, and Northern Michigan University’s Native American Student Association, the event highlights the region’s vibrant Indigenous heritage.

Indigenous vendors will be on-site offering beadwork, art, regalia items, traditional foods, and handmade goods representing generations of cultural knowledge and creativity. Supporting these vendors helps sustain Native-owned businesses and cultural traditions.

Grand entries are scheduled for 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. followed by a community feast at 5 p.m. The program honors elders, veterans and dancers in a powerful display of unity and respect.

Attendees are encouraged to bring non-perishable food items to support NMU’s Food Pantry and assist students facing food insecurity.

For decades, this pow wow has served as a cultural cornerstone in the Upper Peninsula–building connection, fostering education and celebrating Indigenous resilience and identity.
