Superior Health Foundation announces $65K to support food pantries across the U.P. ahead of SNAP reductions

MARQUETTE — The Superior Health Foundation has announced a $65,000 allocation to support food pantries and hunger-relief programs across Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.

This funding comes in response to the delay in Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefit distributions, which began on Nov. 1. Across the region, food pantries have already reported an increase in demand, signaling growing need even before the SNAP delay took effect.

“Our partners are telling us the need is rising right now,” said Megan Murphy, CEO of the Superior Health Foundation in a news release. “We are seeing more working families seeking support as they prepare for the loss of these benefits. We felt it was important to allocate this rapid response funding to help food pantries continue meeting the needs of their communities.”

The Superior Health Foundation is coordinating closely with regional partners to ensure that all funds are distributed quickly, equitably and in alignment with existing local initiatives. The foundation is also collaborating with local community and health foundations, where possible, to support regional funding efforts and maximize collective impact.

“We know that no single organization can meet this challenge alone,” Murphy added. “By working together with local partners and encouraging community giving, we can do our part to ensure that families have access to nutritious food during this difficult period.”

Of the total funds, $60,000 will go directly to food pantries across the Upper Peninsula to help replenish supplies and sustain operations. An additional $5,000 has been designated to support the TV6 Can-a-thon as a community donation match, encouraging individuals and organizations across the U.P. to contribute to local hunger-relief efforts.

Starting at $3.23/week.
