Hit and run reported at Super One leads to fleeing and eluding
MARQUETTE – The Marquette County Sheriff’s Department was dispatched to Super One Foods in Marquette for an employee who was struck by a vehicle in the businesses parking lot around 11:18 a.m. on Saturday. The vehicle had left the scene but the deputy was able to locate them.
After locating the vehicle the deputy performed a traffic stop.
“The deputy could smell the odor of intoxicating liquor coming from the vehicle and the driver,” said the sheriff’s department in a news release.
When the driver was asked to step out of the car he instead drove away. The deputy began pursuit westbound through US-41 where the perpetrator popped a tire on the cement center of the brickyard roundabout. Despite this the driver continued weaving in and out of traffic with the deputy pursuing.
“The vehicle then drove onto Midway Drive and up County Road 510 as the vehicle continued to fall apart,” stated the news release.
The vehicle then came to a stop after turning onto White Bear Drive, then the perpetrator continued to flee on foot. Finally the deputy was able to gain control of the perpetrator with the assistance of a good Samaritan. The perpetrator was checked by EMS at the scene, the deputy was checked at UPHS Marquette for injuries from the altercation and the victim from Super One also went to have a medical evaluation completed.
The perpetrator was arrested for operating while intoxicated, fleeing and eluding and two counts of resisting and obstructing. Charges are being sought for leaving the scene of an injury crash.
Deputies were assisted by a good Samaritan, the Michigan State Police, UPHS EMS and Antilla’s Towing.
