COLLEGE STATION, Texas — On Thursday, Texas A&M University hosted a screening of the documentary film “Can’t Look Away” in honor of Suicide Prevention Month. The film is a gripping documentary that exposes the dark side of social media and its devastating impact on young users. Survivor parents included Maurine Molak (San Antonio, Texas), mother of David Molak, forever 16, and John DeMay (Marquette), father of Jordan DeMay, forever 17, who appears in the film, who were on hand for a panel discussion after the screening to share their personal stories.
The parents and other speakers also addressed what communities can do collectively to prevent future online harms, such as advocating to Congress to pass the Kids Online Safety Act, which would hold Big Tech accountable for continuing to use mechanisms on their platforms that cause harm to children.
