City to begin flushing water system and hydrants soon
ISHPEMING — The City of Ishpeming’s Department of Public Works will begin water system flushing on Monday.
Flushing will generally occur between 7 a.m.-3 p.m. and is expected to be complete by Sept. 19. However, according to the city’s official Facebook page, it may take up to two weeks to flush the entire system.
“Generally speaking, flushing will begin at the north end of town (Eighth Addition) and progress southward,” notes the city’s press release. “Some deviations will occur as flushing approaches the water storage tank.”
When the water flushing occurs in the neighborhood, the accumulated sediment in the water mains will be stirred up and much of the sediment will be flushed out of the system. Due to limitations on the system, some sediment will remain, causing discolored water.
The city recommends that if your water appears discolored, that you should give it time to clear up, then run your cold-water faucet for a few minutes to make sure the discolored water is cleared. They also recommend that water customers avoid washing laundry during the time when hydrants are being flushed in their area.
Water service should not be interrupted and no boil advisories are required as a result of this process. Please contact the DPW at 906-486-9371 with any questions or concerns.
