Summer events continue at Ishpeming Carnegie Public Library

ISHPEMING – The Ishpeming Carnegie Public Library’s Summer Reading Program has been well underway and will officially wrap-up on Saturday, Aug. 16, which is the final day to turn in reading logs and book reviews. However, the library has plenty of events in store for all ages that will continue throughout August.

At 1 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 7, local artist Emily Weddle will be at the library to lead a class for adults and teens on “Drawing What You See,” featuring observational drawing tips and techniques. All supplies will be provided.

Also on Aug. 7 at 4 p.m., the library will be hosting a live reading with writers and artists featured in the ninth edition of the Walloon Writers Review, a literary magazine inspired by the Upper Peninsula and Northern Michigan. This publication is a beautiful collection of poetry, short stories, and nature photography. Artists that will be present are Kate Allore, Milton Bates, Susan Boback, Patty Durell, Lisa Fosmo, Stephen Hooper, Elizabeth Kerlikowske, Ellen Lord, Edd Tury, Glen Young and Elizabeth J. Bates.

At 1 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 8, there will be a craft for teens where they will create shiny scratch art with recycled CDs, wood stylus tools, and their imagination.

At 2 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 14, the library will be hosting its regular Crochet Club program in combination with a Project Linus meet-up. Project Linus now has a Marquette County Chapter that accepts handmade blankets of all types and sizes that will be donated to local children and teens in need. ICPL is a dropoff location for these blankets.

At 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 19, the Gemini Moon Band will be at the library to perform. Gemini Moon performs guitar-driven originals with male/female lead vocals and harmonies, as well as fresh interpretations of classic and modern covers. The group is influenced by 90s alternative and 60s/70s classic rock, as well as blues, pop, and folk from all eras. The band’s original songs feature themes of love, hope, and courage among others.

At 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 20, international bestselling author Sue Harrison will be at the library for a presentation and discussion of her historical novel, The Midwife’s Touch. Snowbound Books will also be at the library to sell copies of Harrison’s books. The Midwife’s Touch is the August selection for the Adult Book Club that meets at ICPL.

From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 22 and Saturday, Aug. 23, the Friends of the Library will be hosting its used book sale. The library will be accepting gently used books throughout August leading up to the sale. All proceeds from the book sale support the library.

“We love offering so many fun events here at our library,” said Nicole Johnson, Librarian at the Ishpeming Carnegie Public Library, in a news release. “It is wonderful getting to provide free events for all in our community to enjoy.”
