September is library card sign-up month

Ishpeming Carnegie Public Library has a full month of activities to mark event

ISHPEMING – The Ishpeming Carnegie Public Library is celebrating Library Card Sign-Up Month in September, and they invite the community to discover how a single card can open the door to endless opportunities.

This year’s theme, “One Card, Endless Possibilities,” is a reminder that libraries are for everyone–regardless of age, background or goals. Whether it’s someone diving into a new hobby, searching for the next great read, brushing up on tech skills, or helping a child succeed in school, it all starts with a library card. Getting a library card is free, easy and empowering.

Library cards for the Ishpeming Carnegie Public Library are available for free to residents living within the city of Ishpeming and surrounding townships including Champion, Ely, Humboldt, Ishpeming, and Tilden townships. Negaunee residents with a Negaunee library card are eligible to sign up for an Ishpeming card as well.

The Ishpeming Carnegie Public Library has diverse programs, book clubs, author talks, storytimes, crafting classes, presentations and more. Throughout September, the library will continue to offer an expansive lineup of programs. Programs are free and open to the public, and don’t require a library card to attend.

From 1-3 p.m. on Sept. 4, the library will host its monthly drop-in and draw club. Artist Kathi Hanson will teach the group about water-soluble graphite tips and techniques. All supplies will be provided, and this event is for teens and adults.

The popular Tot Tuesday Storytime will start back up on Tuesday, Sept. 9 at 11 a.m. and will continue to meet every Tuesday at 11 a.m. in September.

At 4 p.m. on Sept. 11, the graphic novel book club for kids in grades 4-7 will meet and discuss the chosen book. Snacks will be provided and newcomers are always welcome.

In partnership with the Alzheimer’s Association Michigan Chapter, Upper Peninsula, the library will be offering Memory Cafe programs open to all adults and the Alzheimer’s Association will be on site as a special guest to answer questions and provide information. The first event is set for 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 17 at and the group will be planting mums for fall. Registration for this event is required, so call the library at 906-486-4381 to register.

The Lego club will meet at 5 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 18 and kids are invited to build Legos with friends and work to complete various challenges.

At 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 24, Marilena Corradino will be at the library to teach Italian in a casual conversation format. This class is ideal for beginners or those who want to practice speaking Italian with others. Additional classes will continue in October and November.

The library’s silent book club will start meeting again in the fall at Velodrome Coffee in Ishpeming. The meeting date is from noon to 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 27. Bring your own book of choice to read silently for one hour with fellow bookworms, followed by time to socialize and talk about books.

“Library card sign-up month is all about highlighting everything that is available for people at our library,” said Nicole Johnson, librarian at the Ishpeming Carnegie Public Library. “We strive to be a community hub where there is something for everyone to enjoy, from books to engaging programs and much more.”
