MDOT lifting some traffic restrictions to accommodate Labor Day holiday weekend travel

LANSING — With the summer travel season winding down, the Michigan Department of Transportation is removing lane restrictions on 61 percent of its road and bridge projects statewide to ease traffic delays for holiday travelers.

“Across Michigan, we are moving dirt and fixing the damn roads to grow our economy, helping Michiganders go to work, drop their kids off at school and run errands safely,” said Gov. Gretchen Whitmer in a news release. “By the end of this construction season, we will have fixed, repaired or replaced nearly 24,500 lane miles of roads and 1,900 bridges, supporting thousands of good-paying, local jobs without raising taxes by a dime. This year, let’s build on our momentum to pass a bipartisan local road funding plan so we can keep fixing our damn roads and creating good-paying, local jobs.”

“We thank all drivers for their continued patience while much-needed road and bridge work occurs across the state. Please continue that patience this final holiday weekend of the summer, as there will be various work zones that will need to have lane restrictions remain in place for everyone’s safety,” said state transportation director Bradley C. Wieferich. “While the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act and Gov. Whitmer’s Rebuilding Michigan program have provided crucial resources to address our ever-aging transportation system, we do have to remind everyone that those programs will be expiring soon. Without a long-term funding solution, all the progress made the last few years will be lost, and the deterioration of the road and bridge system could lead to more than 100 trunkline bridges closing to traffic by the year 2035, impacting approximately 1.8 million drivers daily.”

Travelers are also reminded that for safety and security, the Mackinac Bridge will be closed to public traffic on Labor Day from 6:30 a.m. to noon during the annual bridge walk. Southbound I-75 and US-2 traffic will be stopped at Exit 344 on the north side of the bridge; northbound I-75 traffic will be stopped at Exit 337 on the south end. For more information, visit the Mackinac Bridge Authority website at www.MackinacBridge.org/Walk or call the MBA at 906-643-7600.

Beginning at 3 p.m. Friday and continuing until 6 a.m. Tuesday, 100 out of 164 projects statewide will have lane restrictions removed. While motorists will see suspended operations in most MDOT work zones for the weekend, drivers are advised that equipment and certain traffic configurations may remain in place, like temporary shifts or shoulder closures.

The following is a list of work zones that will remain active or have lane restrictions during Labor Day weekend. If necessary, detour routes will be posted at the project location. All closures are subject to change. For the most up-to-date information on MDOT projects, go to the Mi Drive website at www.Michigan.gov/Drive.
