Bay College softball coach dies in single person car crash

GARRIS
MARQUETTE – Bay College announced on Saturday that head softball coach John Garris has died. Garris was hired as the head softball coach and compliance director for Bay College in August of 2024.
“Bay College and Norse Athletics is saddened to learn of the sudden passing of Coach Garris,” said Norse Athletic Director Matt Johnson in a public announcement. “In his short time here, he showed his passion and enthusiasm not only for the game of softball, but for life in general. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family at this time.”
Bay College offers condolences to the Garris family.
“Bay College has experienced a huge loss with the passing of Coach Garris. He brought a sense of pride, great enthusiasm, and uplifting energy to both our campus community and the athletic department. His passion for student success was evident in everything he did–always going above and beyond to ensure our students felt supported and valued. His warm smile and unmistakable Southern drawl will be profoundly missed by all,” said Bay College President Dr. Nerita Hughes.
The Delta County Sheriff’s Department informed the university that Garris died in a single person car crash and the cause is still yet to be found.
“It happened Friday,” said Hughes. “He was absolutely well loved, he would have just hit a year this month. Coach Garris was from Alabama so he had this southern drawl that we all loved, he would always have a student centered mind. That was a huge loss for us. “
The job listing for the head softball coach has just been posted, as has the compliance director position. The university hopes to have the roles filled by the end of August when the fall semester at Bay College starts.
