Body of second victim in canoeing accident recovered

KEWEENAW COUNTY — The Keweenaw County Sheriff’s Department reports a second individual was recovered from water that was involved in the capsized canoe incident in Copper Harbor over the weekend.

On Sunday, the Keweenaw County sheriff reported a the body of a second individual was located in the water and recovered. The department was assisted by the Keweenaw Search and Rescue, Copper Harbor Fire Department, the U.S. Coast Guard, the Michigan State Police dive team, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, American Red Cross, Salvation Army and local area restaurants and businesses who donated food and supplies.

On Saturday, the Keweenaw County sheriff initiated a search and rescue operation after three individuals were reported to have capsized while canoeing in Copper Harbor. One individual escaped the vessel and was able to reach shore to call emergency responders at 3:50 a.m. The Keweenaw County sheriff called on additional agencies to begin the search efforts. On Saturday evening, the Keweenaw County sheriff reported one deceased individual had been recovered.
