Attempted arson in Iron Mountain

Zayn Edward Arcand

IRON MOUNTAIN – A 19-year-old was arrested for allegedly throwing fire bombs at the Dickinson County Republican Committee headquarters this weekend.

Zayn Edward Arcand is charged with explosives – manufacture/possession of a Molotov cocktail/explosive or incendiary device causing property damage and arson – preparation to burn property, police said.

“On Saturday … at approximately 3.55 a.m., the Iron Mountain Police Department received a report of a suspicious person in … the area of the Dickinson County Republican Committee headquarters,” said Jeff Solka, director of Iron Mountain Police and Fire Services. “The caller observed the individual attempting to light a rag sticking out of the glass bottle, then throwing the unlit bottle at the building.”

Officers reviewed local security camera footage and identified Arcand throwing the unlit bottle into the building and found another left in the parking lot.

“Upon speaking with the suspect, he admitted to making the bottles in his driveway and he threw the bottle at the building, to send a message against the (what he termed) corruption,” said Solka. “The suspect was hoping what he made was flammable and (would) ignite.”

Arcand was booked into the Dickinson County Jail on Saturday and is awaiting arraignment facing the beforementioned charges.
