NEGAUNEE — Residents and visitors alike to the city of Negaunee will soon start to see changes in the downtown, related to the substantial work completed during the 2024 construction season.

One year ago, the city wrapped up Phase I of its Downtown Enhancement project (aka, Streetscape Project). Serving as a significant investment into the city’s infrastructure and community spaces, the $3.4 million project — funding, in part, came from the U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development, Michigan Department of Transportation Small Urban Development funds and an $885,000 Michigan Economic Development Corporation Revitalization and Placemaking grant — has revitalized the historic downtown area with upgrades such as modernized water and sewer mains, new sidewalks, street lighting and expanded fiber networks.

Additionally, in 2024, several social venues were established by the project, including the Iron Town Plaza, serving as the main entryway into downtown Negaunee and to inspire private investment, safeguard the city’s historic charm and elevate the city as a hub for outdoor recreation.

“Phase II of the project will soon start,” said Nate Heffron, Negaunee city manager. “It’s going to start right after Pioneer Days.”

The annual community-wide bash known as Pioneer Days runs this year from July 5-12. Using a $200,000 Michigan Department of Transportation grant, here’s a look at some of what’s planned:

• Trees will be planted along Jackson Street.

• A bike station with an electric charging station, will be constructed at Jackson Mine Park.

• A covered bus stop will be built near the connecting pathway to the Iron Ore Heritage Trail.

• Crosswalks on Jackson Street will be modified.

• Safety panels will be installed on the Silver Street viaduct.

“We hoping to have things complete by the end of September,” Heffron said.
