Escanaba motorcyclist killed in crash

GWINN — An Escanaba resident was pronounced dead at the scene Friday afternoon in rural Marquette County after he lost control of the motorcycle, leaving the roadway and striking a utility pole, police said.

Officers with the Forsyth Township Police Department, which is the investigating agency, said the crash occurred at about 4:30 p.m. Friday on M-35 near the intersection with Marquette County Road 557.

Glenn Daniel Varney, 58, of Escanaba, had been traveling west on M-35 when he lost control, ending up on the roadway’s shoulder before ultimately impacting the pole.

Despite immediate resuscitation efforts, Varney was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, police said.

At this time, it is unknown if any other factors contributed to the accident, the FTPD said in a written statement. The FTPD was assisted by the Marquette County Sheriff’s Office accident investigation team in gathering information.
