Spring cleanup opens compost site for residents
ISHPEMING — The city of Ishpeming will be beginning their refuse collections this month for large, non-hazardous garbage items.
Residents are required to present identification and their city utility bill when disposing garbage during the refuse collections. Roll-off containers will be available to help residents haul their garbage, and there will be a limit of one truck load per day. Special Saturday Refuse Collections are held on the last Saturday of every month through October, and there will be an additional day in May for spring cleanup.
Prohibited items include tires, used oil, low-level radioactive waste, hazardous waste, liquid waste, sewage, PCBs, asbestos waste, medical waste, and construction materials such as shingles. Beverage containers, cardboard, and scrap metal should be recycled curbside, while yard clippings should be placed in compost piles and brush/small diameter trees and branches should be placed in brush piles.
The compost site will be open for refuse collections at these times during May:
– 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on May 16
– 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on May 17
– 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on May 30
– 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on May 31
