Marinas and beaches open for summer

MARQUETTE — As the weather warms, the city of Marquette is gearing up for a summer of aquatic recreation.

The city’s marinas have been open since the beginning of May, even the marina at Upper Harbor which was damaged by ice this past winter. Boaters can already be seen enjoying the wind and waves in Presque Isle Harbor and Marquette Bay.

Beaches will be open and staffed with lifeguards starting May 24th for those intrepid swimmers willing to brave Lake Superior’s early season water temps.

“We should have enough staff this year,” said Jeff Fossitt, Fire Marshall for the city of Marquette.

“We have 10-12 lifeguards this summer.”

Lifeguards will be staffing all three stands at McCarty’s cove, and as in previous summers the beaches will be guarded until 7:30 p.m. each day.

Starting at $3.23/week.
