Free fruit and nut trees encourage tree planting and healthy eating

ISHPEMING — A fruit and nut tree planting event, organized by the Ishpeming Lions Club with support from Partridge Creek Farm and Partridge Creek Compost, invites residents to come plant their own trees.

There will be two tree planting sessions available on Saturday: one from 10 to 11 a.m. at Partridge Creek Farm’s community site at 550 Cleveland Avenue, and one from 12 to 1 p.m. next to the Cliffs Shaft Mining Museum at 501 West Euclid Street.

Participation is free and attendees are encouraged to participate in one or more of the more than 10 educational demonstrations taking place during each session. Participating Ishpeming residents will be able to take home one to three fruit or nut trees after the event, along with materials to help protect and care for them.

Donations are welcome to help sustain the event for future years.

“This event is part of an effort to provide Ishpeming residents the opportunity to cultivate free, local, healthy food for their families and communities,” said Keats Dormont, event organizer and education coordinator at Partridge Creek Farm, in a press release. “It’s a community movement aimed at addressing long-term food insecurity in our region.”

Starting at $3.23/week.
