Forsyth Township votes no on millage, while Richmond Township passes operating millage

MARQUETTE – Spring election results are in and results show a majority of Forsyth Township residents deny a millage increase to pay for improving the Gwinn Area Community Schools, showing a desire to keep property taxes low over increasing educational infrastructure.

Forsyth Township voted to see if or if not Gwinn Area Community Schools would increase millage to 3.10, equating to $3.1 per $1,000 of taxable property value. The total amount of money borrowed would not have exceeded $30,925,000, and the money would go to erecting, furnishing and equipping additions to the middle/high school building, including a secure entrance addition; partially remodeling, furnishing and refurnishing, and equipping and re-equipping the middle/high school building; erecting a press box structure; and preparing, developing, and improving the site as it stated on the ballot.

As of 11 a.m. Wednesday, there were a total of 2,313 votes with 960 yes and 1,353 no, said Marquette County Clerk Linda Talsma.

This voting cycle also saw Richmond Township have an operating millage request that saw a total of 132 votes, with 100 yes and 32 no, said Talsma. The operating millage request will see an increase of 0.006, going to a total of $2 per $1,000 of taxable property value through 2029. This will raise an estimated $64,000 in the first year the millage takes effect.
