MARQUETTE – Across the Upper Peninsula ceremonies were held to observe Memorial Day. From end to end, in almost every city the public celebrated the Armed Forces Veterans who died in the line of service.

In Marquette, American Legion Post 44 held a service at Holy Cross Cemetery and Park Cemetery. After the services attendees held a social with refreshments. A ceremony was also held at the Jacobetti Home for Veterans. Negaunee and Gwinn both held a Memorial Day parade. After both there was a service at the Negaunee Cemetery and Peter Nordeen Park respectively.

In Ishpeming for Memorial Day, headstones were replaced and american flags were placed over the many veterans buried in the city’s cemetery. Volunteer groups alongside veterans from the Ishpeming VFW and the Ishpeming American Legion, came together to reset flags at gravesites of local soldiers who have served throughout history. These volunteers held a luncheon at the American Legion Post 144 in Ely Township.

Other services and ceremonies took place at: Bark River Township Cemetery, Bates Township Cemetery, Detour Village Veterans Park Cemetery, Dickinson County Courthouse, Dollar Bay Baseball Field ceremony, Gardens of Rest Memorial Park and Mausoleum, Hubbell VFW Post 4624, Iron Mountain Cemetery Park, Iron River Cemetery, Ironwood Veterans Monument, Norway Township Cemetery, Rapid River Downtown area festivities and Watersmeet Cemetery ceremony.

These ceremonies across the Upper Peninsula and the greater nation, with the countless celebrators, showcase the admiration the public has for the brave men and women who lost their lives in the line of duty.
