Marquette Commission hears updates on trash pickup changes
MARQUETTE — The Marquette City Commission got a look at upcoming changes to trash collection in the city of Marquette during its Monday meeting.
The comission heard the first reading of two updates to city ordinances which would take effect this summer when the city moves to cart-only trash pickup.
Currently, trash pickup in the city is a mix of cart pickup and bags that have stickers placed on them. When the change is made, Waste Management will be distributing carts to city residents that don’t currently have them.
The two changes heard Monday focus on updates to language which would change the guidelines for putting trash and recycling containers on city streets. The proposed updates would still see city residents placing their containers outside for collection after 1 p.m. the day before their neighborhood’s collection time and would require residents to remove the carts from the public right-of-way within 12 hours of pickup. The proposed ordinance would eliminate bags with stickers as an acceptable way to put out trash for pickup.
As it currently stands, the city requires residents who have carts to remove them from public view on their property after collection.
With cart distribution set for this summer, Waste Management will still allow residents to use the bags with stickers in the meantime, with a Sept. 30 cutoff date.
For households that do not yet have a 64-gallon garbage cart, one will be delivered to your house during Summer 2025.
For those who may be in need of accommodations for placing your garbage cart curbside for pickup may contact Public Works in order to register for special accommodations from Waste Management. Special service cannot be provided without registration.
The commission will vote to approve the updated ordinances during its May 12 meeting.
In other business, the commission approved a measure which authorizes Marquette City Manager Karen Kovacs to negotiate a sale of a portion of a McClellan Ave. parcel to the Marquette Golf Club, who hopes to develop the parcel into a new clubhouse.
While the commission voted unanimously to approve the proposal, some commissioners had questions regarding the sale, which is still early in the process.
