By Journal Staff

MARQUETTE — The city of Marquette and its surrounding municipalities will soon be enforcing winter bans for overnight parking.

The city of Marquette forbids vehicles from parking on any city street between 1 and 6 a.m. from Friday to April 1. Violating this rule will incur a $75 fine. Vehicles can also be towed if they impede snow removal efforts by plow crews.

In Ishpeming, the winter parking ban forbids vehicles from parking on residential streets from 1 to 6 a.m. and downtown streets from 2 to 6 a.m. starting Friday and ending April 30. Parking permits for city lots can be purchased at city hall for $25 per month.

Negaunee’s parking ban similarly runs from Friday to April 30 between 2 to 6 a.m. This violation carries a fine of $50 with a $15 late fee being assessed after 96 hours.

According to Negaunee City Ordinance 692.03L, residents may park on city rights-of-way during November, December, January, February, March and April at the driver’s own risk. Parking may not cause “any issue for plow drivers and/or the safety of the community.” If a vehicle breaks down and is at risk of violating the ban, notify the Negaunee Police Department at 906-475-4154 or Central Dispatch at 906-475-9912.

Michigamme’s ban lasts from 2 a.m. until roads are plowed from Friday to April 30. Any person in violation will be guilty of a municipal civil infraction and be subject to a civil fine of $50 for a first offense, $100 for a second offense and $500 for the third and subsequent violations in any 12-month period. The township also reserves the right to have the affected vehicles towed at the owner’s expense, including storage fees.

Representatives from Forsyth Township and its police department were unable to provide information on the municipality’s winter parking ban.

Starting at $3.23/week.
