City of Marquette approves Community Master plan

MARQUETTE — The Marquette City Commission approved the proposed Community Master Plan earlier this month after years of preparation.

The board’s approval came a few weeks after the Marquette City Planning Commission signed off on the plan, which aims to address issues in the area such as housing, tourism, natural resource management and transportation.

The plan includes plans for redevelopment of several Marquette areas, including the South Front Street corridor, the West Washington Street corridor, North Lakeshore Boulevard, the O’Dovero Drive area near Tadych’s Food and the former Marquette Mall area.

Other highlights of the plan include a recreation corridor which voers the shoreline that extends from the 323-acre Presque Isle headland at the north end of Mattson Park.

The plan for the 367-acre University/North Marquette area could would look to create a more pedestrian and bike-friendly campus area by reconfiguring the streets and parking areas on the south side of campus, which could mean potentially closing Seventh Street and connecting Kaye Avenue to Fair Street.

The master plan took over two years to complete and came after many public forums, workshop sessions, questionnaires and commission meetings.

Any redesigns in the master plan will be planned in detail at a future date and will need to be approved by the commission before being implemented.
