Bystander saves family from house fire
CHASSELL — Michigan State Police troopers, along with a bystander, successfully evacuated residents from a Chassell Township structure fire at approximately 2 a.m. on Aug. 1.
The man who called 911, Gary Steinhoff, told the troopers he was driving southbound on Wilson Memorial Drive when he noticed active flames. He initially thought it was a campfire but turned around and realized the blaze was on the residence’s front porch.
After reporting the emergency, Steinhoff continued past the flames to knock on the door and notify the homeowners.
After unsuccessful attempts at the front door, he continued to knock on windows until the residents were awake. The tenants were safely removed from the home by jumping out of a first-floor window.
Chassell Township Fire Department along with Hurontown Fire Department were able to extinguish the fire. Semoco and UPPCO also assisted on the scene.
No foul play is suspected in this fire.
