Fish hatchery assault investigated
ISHPEMING — At 9:15 a.m. Thursday, officers from the Ishpeming Police Department were dispatched to the Japer Ridge campground regarding a possible felonious assault involving a firearm.
The incident occurred on a trail off the campgrounds heading toward the Ishpeming Cemetery. Off the trail is the old Ishpeming Fish Hatchery, which has been abandoned for several years.
It was reported that a male and female were inside the fenced-in area of the fish hatchery and confronted a hiker about trespassing onto the land. It was report that the male subject brandished a firearm. This incident was not reported right away and some time had elapsed before officers were notified.
Officers attempted contact with the male and female at the hatchery building. After several attempts, a search warrant was obtained and officers made entry into the fenced in property and conducted an extensive search of the premises. Officers located guns inside the abandoned building however, no subjected were located. Police are continuing the investigation in an attempt to identify the subjects involved. the guns were located and confiscated by officers.
Police are asking if anyone knows the identity of the subjects who appear to be staying at the Old Fish Hatchery to please contact the Ishpeming Police Departments at 906-486-4416 or Central Dispatch at 911 or the non-emergency number at 906-475-9912. It should be noted that the incident was isolated and there is no immediate danger to the community. The names of the possible subjects involved will not be released at this time as the investigation continues.
The Ishpeming Police Department were assisted on scene by the Negaunee Police Department, Michigan State Police, K-9, Michigan State Police Emergency Response Team and the Marquette County Sheriff’s Office.
