BIG BAY — Work is underway by a couple of local groups to convert the Big Bay Pathway Trailhead into a native plant garden and outdoor classroom.

Citizens for a Safe & Clean Lake Superior is partnering with Powell Township Parks and Recreation, Powell Township School and other organizations and businesses to repopulate the area with native and pollinator-friendly plants while providing learning opportunities along the way.

Over 400 native plant seedlings have been planted since the project began in May.

Plants native to a certain area provide a habitat and food for pollinators like butterflies, dragonflies and native bees.

They also have deep roots and can absorb up to 90% more water than non-native species, according to CSCLS Director Jane Fitkin.

This public-access native plant garden is meant to provide outdoor education opportunities to Powell Township and Marquette County communities by immersing residents in a native plant-dominated space.

Locally-crafted benches and interpretive signage will be installed to encourage folks to sit, ponder and learn about the inter-connectedness of nature.

The space will also be used for nature-based learning opportunities in elementary schools. Fitkin said, “Familiarizing students with native plants and ecosystems starting at a young age gives them the knowledge they need to lead lives as champions of our Earth and we’re happy to join forces with Parks and Rec., Powell Township School and others to make this dream project a reality.

This project was made possible through grants from the U.P. Environmental Coalition and Community Foundation of Marquette County.

Starting at $4.62/week.
