Combat Veterans fundraiser ride for Jacobetti home

LITTLE LAKE — The Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association 35-1 will undertake a ride as a fundraiser for the Jacobetti Veterans Home on Aug. 10.

This is the 10th annual Ride for Jacobetti’s by the CVMA, according to the group’s leader, Commander Joe Kerekes.

The bikers will meet at 10 a.m. at the American Legion post 349 in Little Lake. After a breakfast made by the Sons of the American Legion, the CVMA riders will have kickstands up at 11 a.m. and ride down Forest Lake Road through Rock and back to the Legion building after a visit to the Jacobetti Veterans Home.

Sons of the Legion (whose parent is or had been a member of the American Legion) will separately be donating their breakfast proceeds to Jacobetti Home.

CVMA members kick in $20 per bike and $10 per passenger for the ride.

Later on the evening of the 10th the group will meet at the Little Lake Legion with live music for a BBQ dinner. There will be a 50/50 drawing, with 50% of the money collected for Jacobetti and 50% to the winner.

The Combat Veterans have collected donated items from auto parts stores and gas stations and will auction them off, with all proceeds for Jacobetti.

The check to Jacobetti was presented at Jacobetti Home after the ride on Aug. 10. The check was based on previous collections, money in the group’s bank account and an estimate of what they expected to collect after the BBQ dinner. The CVMA earmarks the fund for activities for Jacobetti veterans. The veterans’ home has in past years used it for outings, such as to hockey games, Kerekes said.

CVMA riders are from all five branches of military service (Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and Coast Guard), Karekes said. There are 44 members, including two support members who are veterans but did not serve in combat, and six auxiliary members (wives of members).

“This is our 10th year of doing the fundraising event for Jacobetti,” Karekes said. “Last year we gave them $10,000.”

Karekes said the event and amount raised has grown each year. In total, they have donated $65,500 over the past 10 years.”

Following the fundraising events, the CVMA and their guests will hold a Flag Burning ceremony to decommission some American flags. “Burning is the only appropriate and respectful way to take a U.S. flag out of service,” Kerkekes said. “It’s always an emotional thing.”
