Schoolcraft County ATV crash kills driver

MANISTIQUE — An all terrain vehicle driver died of injuries from an accident on Hemlock Trail in Schoolcraft County’s Thompson Township on Sunday.

Upon arrival at the scene at 8:15 p.m., Michigan State Police troopers found an ATV had overturned after losing control, ejecting both the driver and the passenger. The ATV then rolled over causing life-threatening injuries to the driver and minor injuries to the 11-year-old passenger. Neither of the subjects were wearing helmets at the time of the crash.

Life-saving measures were attempted at the scene however, the driver was pronounced dead after being transported to the Schoolcraft Memorial Hospital by Manistique EMS.

The deceased driver was a 33-year-old male from Chicago, Ill. The passenger is his niece.

The crash remains under investigation. Troopers were assisted by Manistique Public Safety and Sault Tribal Police Department.
