MARQUETTE — Police officers responding late Friday to a report of a vehicle ablaze in the woods found much more than a simple fire.

Marquette County Sheriff’s Office deputies discovered a deceased person in the car, which was on fire at 9:50 p.m. Friday off Marquette County Road 492.

The vehicle was parked in a wooded area just off the main roadway, officials said.

The Marquette Township Fire Department was also dispatched to the scene to extinguish the fire, which is when the deceased was found in the vehicle.

The identity of the deceased was not released, pending additional investigation.

The Marquette County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by the Michigan State Police from the Negaunee Township post, Anttila’s Towing, the Marquette County Road Commission, UP Health Systems EMS and the Marquette Township Fire and EMS unit.
