Price of gas drops in area

MARQUETTE — This week brings us Presidents Day, which may bring a sale or two.

Perhaps more exciting, gas prices dropped a few cents a gallon on Monday, Feb. 19.

According to AAA, gas prices in Michigan are down a nickel from a week ago. The Michigan average price on Monday was $3.201, compared to the national average of $3.279.

In Marquette, the average price per gallon on Monday was $3.09. A year ago in Marquette, a gallon at the pump was $3.318.

According to Gas Buddy, fuel prices should continue to fall throughout 2024.

Lower prices make it even more appealing to check out winter events scheduled across the U.P., including the Pine Mountain International Ski Jump (Feb. 23-25) in Iron Mountain, held annually since 1938. Teams from all over the world come to participate.

Tom Nemachuck with the Upper Peninsula Travel and Recreation Association noted that the roads are exceptional. “It’s one of the great destinations in the country in winter. even in areas that get 200-300 inches of snow annually. We know how to clear roads here,” he said.
