MARQUETTE -- After serving the Marquette Area Chapter of the North Country Trail Association for over a decade, President Lynn Meister-Thomas was recognized with the NCTA Leadership Award.

Recipients of the award have demonstrated exceptional leadership over a three-year period or more leading to significant local achievements or highly successful events.

"Receiving this leadership award for the North Country Trail is an immense honor," she said. "Much of the credit goes to the hard work of our Marquette Area Chapter board and volunteers."

Her award description stated that, despite living an hour's drive -- on a good day -- from the hub of chapter activities in Marquette, Meister-Thomas "serves as president with enthusiasm, persistence and grace. Her positive attitude keeps board meetings productive and lively, and her impressive communication skills keep our community engaged and informed. Lynn has formed and strengthened many community partnerships, increasing awareness for the trail in the central Upper Peninsula."

The North Country Trail stretches 4,800 miles across eight states, making it the longest of the national scenic trails. It achieved "unit" status from the National Park Service in December, making it eligible for funding and promotional opportunities.

Meister-Thomas is instrumental in organizing group hikes and frequently serves as the leader or sweep for such events. She is also active with the chapter's trail crew committee, which maintains about 120 miles that span the MAC and is a trail adopter for one segment.

Fellow MAC board member and trail crew leader Michael Sekely accepted the leadership award on Meister-Thomas' behalf at the NCTA's annual celebration in Chestertown, N.Y.

The NCTA's 2024 celebration will be held Aug. 21-25 in St. Ignace.
