MARQUETTE -- Multiple Freedom of Information Act requests have been sent to the Marquette Area Public Schools' FOIA coordinator concerning the board of education's communications.
The requests, sent by longtime Marquette resident and intellectual property attorney Margaret Brumm, are in regard to the recent donation of 1,100 Marquette Sentinels T-shirts by one or more anonymous donors.
Brumm has notably been voicing her position against the Marquette Senior High School's rebrand to the Marquette Sentinels by submitting federal and state applications to trademark the school's new nickname.
"In my experience, it is highly unusual for people to donate money/goods in-kind to a school system, where the school system itself has not declared banktruptcy," Brumm said in her FOIA request to MAPS. "Therefore, I am concerned that these 'donations' of money/goods in-kind, may have been made for purpose of influencing future awarding of contracts to supply 'Marquette Sentinals' not indigent branded clothing and other materials."
Officially, her FOIA request asked for the following information: name and address of the anonymous donor(s) and whether they live inside the MAPS district.
Furthermore, she also requested the addressed and received emails for all members of the MAPS board starting July 1 and ending July 31.
"The reason for this request is that I would like to know who the members of the school board were communicating with during the decision-making period leading up to the 4-3 decision to abandon the Marquette Redmen nickname and logo," Brumm said in her request.
MAPS did not respond to The Mining Journal's request for comment.
