MARQUETTE -- A new commission aiming to increase representation for LGBTQ+ individuals around the state of Michigan includes multiple Upper Peninsula residents appointed by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer.
Two Upper Peninsula residents will be seated on the first-of-its-kind LGBTQ+ Commission. The commission was created in June through Executive Order 2023-5. The 13-person commission will advise Whitmer and the director of the Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity on the impact of state policy and legislation on LGBTQ+ citizens around the state while aiming to improve and protect the health and safety of those citizens.
The commission was structured to reflect the socioeconomic, racial, cultural, ethnic and gender identity diversity of the state.
"This first-ever statewide LGBTQ+ commission will work to end discrimination and inequality against LGBTQ+ Michiganders and attract members of the LGBTQ+ community to Michigan by ensuring our state is a safe place for everyone to thrive," said Lt. Gov. Garlin Gilchrist in a press release. "Our vision for Michigan is expansive enough for everyone, and Gov. Whitmer and I will continue using every tool in our toolbox to build a Michigan where everyone can envision a bright future for themselves."
The first of the appointees from the Upper Peninsula is Chatham's Dr. Renee McLaughlin. McLaughlin is the natioinal medical director at CIGNA Healthcare and has previously served on the board of directors of the Human Rights Campaign. Her appointment looks to provide representation for medical professionals who provide care to the LGBTQ+ community. Her appointment expires on Nov. 29, 2027.
Marquette's Al Gray works as a licensed social worker at Suunta Intergrative Health and also serves as a program coordinator for Trace Holistic Inc. in Marquette. His appointment aims to represent rural communities and will also expire in November 2027.
