Recall petition filed against Ishpeming City Council member

ISHPEMING -- An Ishpeming City Council member maybe be facing a recall.

Ishpeming resident Mike Tonkin, on behalf of a group of Ishpeming residents, submitted a recall petition against Councilor Lindsay Bean on Tuesday.

According to the recall petition, Bean is facing a recall for "consistently violating the Ishpeming City Charter, repeatedly allowing both the Ishpeming City Manager and City Attorney to violate said charter and for violating the Open Meetings Act."

"I always said that the best way to get the right people in the office is to vote them in or out. I don't like recall petitions myself, but when it comes down to the point of no return, the public has to speak in some way," Tonkin said in a phone interview with The Mining Journal. "I guess that's kind of the frustration that the group has shown, is that something's got to be done."

Tonkin said the group is "tired of all the stuff that's going on with the city council and the way (the council) is breaking the charter constantly."

The Marquette County Election Commission will meet at 1 p.m. Friday, Dec. 29 in the probate courtroom in Marquette to conduct a hearing and rule on the clarity and factuality of recall language filed against Bean.

The Mining Journal reached out to Bean for comment but did not hear back by publication deadline.
