MICHIGAMME — Michigamme Township is without a supervisor for the second month. After interviewing four candidates for the position on Monday, township clerk Tami Hillis said the board was not able to reach a consensus as to which candidate to hire.

“As a board, we could not get past a 2-2 vote on any of them, except for one of the candidates who we were able to rule out with a 3-1 vote,” Hillis said.

The four candidates who were considered for the position were Heather Smith, Lisa Rogers, Kathryn Hanson and Julia Leake. The vacancy had been posted on the township website as well as throughout the community.

Hillis said she is not sure what the board will do to get a supervisor in the seat.

“At this point I am not sure what the next step is going to be,” she said.

The seat has been vacant since former supervisor Rhonda Boshears resigned in October, citing disagreements with certain township board members.

According to township meeting minutes, the board voted to officially accept Boshears’ resignation during its November meeting.

Boshears took the seat in 2022. She was elected to fill the remainder of William Seppanen’s term, which was set to expire Nov. 20, 2024.

Seppanen was recalled after the township board voted in 2021 to remove a gazebo from the right-of-way on the corner of Max and Lake Streets and put it at the public park on Main Street.
